Updated CEO Statement

14th May 2021: 11:00am

We are really pleased that the First Minister will announce at 12.15pm that wales will go into Alert Level 2. This is brilliant news for our business and as of Monday we will increase our class sizes at Pontypool ALC to 30 indoors and this will apply to all indoor groups using our facilities. Outdoors will also increase to 50 people as of the same date.

Thank you for continuing to follow the guidelines to keep wales safe and a huge thank you from myself and the team for your ongoing support to our existing customers and all of our new members!

23rd April 2021: 1:00pm

Good afternoon all,

Some fantastic news from the First Minister today in relation to our return to facilities! Our teams will now move forward to amend operational plans to ensure your safe return.  Today many of our team have returned from furlough for re-induction into the new business. Keep an eye on our social media for further updates! A huge thank you to Welsh Government for continued engagement and to Welsh Sports Association and Sport Wales for their ongoing support!

These are the key points for the new roadmap.

  • Up to 6 adults from 6 households will be able to meet outdoors from Saturday 24 April.
  • Organised activity for up to 30 adults will begin, as planned, on Monday 26 April.
  • Indoor Group activity for up to 15 adults can restart from the 3 May, the same day as the reopening of indoor sporting facilities. The restart of group activity had previously been planned for the 17 May and has been pulled forward a fortnight.
  • Indoor group activity for under 18s can restart on the 3 May, and are not limited     on numbers but should still respect physical distancing requirements and the wider guidance on gathering indoors.
  • Should the situation remain positive, Wales could move to Alert Level 2 on the 17     May - allowing pubs, restaurants, cafes, cinemas and museums to reopen. This is outlined in the updated Coronavirus Control Plan. This step may also increase the limits on gatherings outdoors to 50 adults, and indoors to 30 adults.

We are ready for your return! We can’t wait to see you.  Time to start our recovery.

If you have any queries our bookings team are open Monday to Friday from 10:00am until 6:00pm on 01633 627100 to take your calls.

9th April 2021: 9:00am

A very positive update today in light of information received from Welsh Government.

  • Now, Outdoor Group activity for up to 30 adults can restart from the 26 April, where it had previously been the 3 May.
  • Indoor sporting facilities, including gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools will be able to reopen on the 3 May for individual activity, previously the 10th May.
  • Gatherings of up to 15 indoors for exercise classes etc will return on the 17th May, as previously planned.

This wonderful welcome news for our teams and customers and I want to extend my personal thanks to Welsh Government for listening to our Sector and recognising the impact that we have on the Health and Wellbeing of the Nation.

We will now proceed to return many of our team from Furlough to make final preparations on programmes and operational plans ready to welcome everyone back!

We have a busy few weeks ahead but please keep up to date on our social media channels and your email for regular updates as we move to reopening!

We can’t wait to have you back!

1st April 2021 3:00pm

As per every review date with Welsh Government I am writing to respond to the press releases overnight with regards to our return. Despite regular and detailed engagement with Welsh Government throughout the whole of the pandemic it has become apparent that we sit at the back of the queue in relation to our reopening.

It has been a pleasure to see our outdoor courts in use again this week for under 18’s organised sporting activity but we are hugely disappointed with the timelines associated with the return of our facilities. Welsh Government have announced that on the 3rd of May outdoor organised sporting activity for adults will return. On 10th May indoor individual activity can return and on the 17th May organised indoor group activities for up to fifteen people will be permitted.

We have consistently provided evidence that our facilities and Covid operational measures are safe. There is no new additional evidence that we are aware of that Welsh Government is considering to arrive at this timeline and to say that our pathway to reopening has left us shocked and disheartened would bean understatement.

As we have done throughout the last twelve months, we will continue to engage with Welsh Government. However, we urge Ministers, Cabinet and Public Health to reconsider the timelines associated with our reopening and to appreciate that sport and physical activity are key components for a healthy recovery from the pandemic. We are one of the answers for the health and wellbeing of the nation.

I am really disappointed to update you with these timelines but our team will continue to work on reopening plans and as I have said many times before we need you back in our facilities supporting our team, your clubs and groups, to ensure that we can get the health and wellbeing of Torfaen at the heart of everything that we do.

Thank you for your ongoing support everyone. Please continue to follow the guidelines and have a safe bank holiday weekend.

26th March 2021 12.15pm

Further to the Welsh Government’s announcement late last night, I am pleased that we are now able to reopen our outdoor facilities for organised sporting activity for Under 18’s.  Thank you to our Clubs and Groups who have already been in contact with regards to facility bookings. As you are aware, many of our team remain on the Job Retention Scheme and therefore I ask for your patience when contacting us.  If you are interested in making a booking for one of our outdoor facilities, please email one of our team who are working remotely will respond to your enquiry.

Our priority remains the Mass Vaccination clinic at Cwmbran Stadium and I want to extend my thanks to all of the TLT team who are furloughed and currently volunteering for the Mass Vaccination programme.

We continue to work with Welsh Sports Association, Sport Wales and Welsh Government in relation to the reopening of indoor facilities and hope to have more news after the review on 23rd April.

Please don’t forget to sign up for Go Fit Live taking place this Saturday.  I know our Instructors have missed you all and would love to see you virtually.

Thank you for your ongoing support and the kindness you have shown our Organisation throughout the Pandemic.  We can’t wait to be back!  Please continue to follow the guidelines as they change.

12th March 2021 2.30pm

Further to the First Minister's announcement today we will start to make steps to look at the re-opening of outdoor courts and our ski center for under 18 activity from the 27th March 2021.

Please be patient with us and remember that most of our team are on furlough and if you email regarding a booking there may be a short delay in responding but we will endeavor to respond to you by early next week.

Please remember we have issued out our survey in regards to re-opening which is critical to shape the way we re-open. Please take just 10 minutes of your time to let us know your views.

We really cant wait to see you soon.

19th December 6.30pm

It is clear that the coronavirus situation in Wales has significantly worsened and as a result of this position, Welsh Government has announced that as of midnight tonight we will go into Alert Level 4 restrictions in Wales. Therefore, it is with the greatest of sadness, that I am writing to you to advise that we have now closed our facilities as instructed by the First Minister.

Welsh Government have been absolutely clear that the virus is spreading quickly and therefore we are urging all of our customers, Torfaen Leisure Trust Colleagues, Partners, Clubs and Groups, to follow the current restrictions to keep Torfaen safe and to contribute to the slow of the spread of the virus in Wales as a whole.

I send my sincere apologies to our Torfaen Leisure Trust Team and our Clubs and Groups that we were unable at this time to provide you with advance notice of our closure, but Welsh Government have had to make rapid decisions as a result of the current position.

In relation to any bookings you may have with Torfaen Leisure Trust, please bear with us and our Team will come back to you in the new year with regards to a refund and as previously communicated all January Direct Debits will be suspended.

On behalf of myself, the Board of Trustee’s and our TLT Colleagues, I would like to thank you for your ongoing messages of comfort and support to us since our re-opening on the 10th August. They have been a pleasure to read and have been most welcomed by myself and our team.

We urge you again to follow the rules as set by Welsh Government to ensure that the rate of infection decreases and we are able to get back into our buildings as soon as possible.

Please take care of each other, stay safe and have a peaceful Christmas.

16th December 2020 8:00pm

I write with a heavy heart every time I have to communicate with you regarding the COVID pandemic and tonight I write to you with confirmation of our third closure.  Our doors will close at end of business on 23rd December and we will ensure that our teams are home safe for Christmas Eve.  It has been the most challenging year for our teams and we have Mums, Dads and Guardians who will need to spend time with excited children for the arrival of Santa (I understand he has a full travel pass from the First Minister and will be able to visit all homes)

The reality that we are currently facing is that COVID numbers are rising and whilst Welsh Government know that we are safe and value our services, this is now a public health crisis and everything possible has to be done to slow the spread of this awful virus.

Whilst I write, I have to commend my Torfaen Leisure Trust colleagues who have worked tirelessly throughout this pandemic and as a Chief Executive, I could not be any prouder of the team and their resilience, motivation, care and compassion that they have shown everyone.  They have truly been exceptional and Team TLT, I am grateful for your ongoing support.

This closure is for an indefinite period.  We are relying upon every one of our customers to follow the guidance and ensure that you do everything possible to enable us to return to the sports and facilities that we love.  This is a collective effort and we urge you to help our friends in health who are already struggling with rising cases.

As a Company, as we have done twice before, we will be ready to reopen our doors as soon as we are advised it is safe to do so.

Torfaen Leisure Trust will not be calling the Direct Debits in January for your memberships and we will update you with any further information as soon as we have it.

Please stay safe.  Take care of each other and have a peaceful and safe Christmas.

Nadolig Llawen from myself and all the team at TLT
